Girls League Champs! Win 10th title since 2000 with 182-126 win over Yorktown

The Lady Tuskers had one heck of a meet, scoring 182 points in the 19 events and winning by over 50 points.  All League honors went to Sami Persic, Eve Marenghi, Maggie Hashmall, Jackie Krueger, Bene Abbate, Alexa Baiano, and Crosby Tillman.  Even though the girls only won the 400m, 800m, 400m hurdles, pole vault, racewalk, 4x8 and 4x4, they still dominated the meet with their depth and their versatility.  The girls placed at least 2nd in 14 of the 19 events and scored in every single event.

Boys beat Carmel and Yorktown with balances attack

The Somers boys started the year off right with easy wins over Carmel and Yorktown.  The Tuskers beat Carmel 132-14 and Yorktown 101-48.  The boys have only lost 3-4 dual meets since 1998, going appox. 54-4 in that time period.

Girls win 58th straight dual meets over Yorktown, Carmel

The Somers girls track and field team won their winning streak to 58 straight dual meets, dating back to 1998.  The Lady Tuskers beat Carmel 132-10 and Yorktown 104-44.

Great day at Easterns - Groton and 4 x 800 win!

It was a great day for Somers at the Eastern States Meet at Iona Prep on Sunday June 6. The boys team posted two wins which we have never done before. Jonathan Groton won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.80 FAT into a stiff headwind. He would have approached the school record of 22.3 (hand time) had it not been for the wind.

The 4 x 800 also won with a time of 8:02.25 for the team's best time of the year and our first ever Easterns relay win. Frank Licursi went out hard and ran without any help from other teams, posting a time of 1:59.9 running into a strong wind on the finishing straight. If Frank had someone pushing him, we may have approached the 8:00 mark. Scott Friedman also ran a great race, going out in 58.4 and battling in hard to ran a PR 2:01.6 keeping a 40 meter lead. Isaac Shelby, determined to finally get out fast, did just that, setting his 400 meter PR with an opening lap of 56.7. He battled the wind on the home straight and stayed tough driving in to a PR of 2:02.5. Germantown made a run on Somers and pushed Albert Tunas on the final leg. Tunas went out in 57.4 with the Germantown anchor closing in. The Germantown runner came to Albert's shoulder on the final straight and Albert, always clutch, pulled away with a great finish to clock a PR 1:58.0 to secure the win a season best team time of 8:02.25.

TWO SCHOOL RECORDS - Crowley in the hammer throw and the 4 x 200 meter relay. John Crowley, a senior, finally broke the hammer throw record with a heave of 131' 10" after coming close several times this season.
The 4 x 200 meter relay, with four seniors, also finally broke a record they have been chasing. Sam Hettich (23.8), Anthony Pierrotti (23.1), Jake Robatel (24.3), and Jonathan Groton (22.0) posted a time of 1:33.69 FAT to break the former record of 1:33.6 (handtime) set in 2005 by Rob Gonzalez, Nick Gonzalez, Morgan Abdelbnour, and Andy Macaluso. The team placed fifth to earn medals. Groton blazed a 22.0 anchor leg (with some watches timing in 21.9) showing what was to come in the open 200.

Senior Jake Robatel set a PR in the triple jump with a leap of 40' 9" placing 10th. Kevin Nolan matched his recent PR of 12' in the pole vault and placed sixth. Dan Lisowski made the finals twice placing sixth in the discus at 137' 2" and sixth in the shot put at 42' 4 3/4". Lisowski, struggling with fouls recently, threw a 49 foot plus bomb on his final throw and barely fouled, almost holding himself in the circle. Rob Gorecki who has been the heart and soul of our distance program for the past four years ran his final race for Somers, going out hard in the 2k steeple and battling to hold on with a time of 6:45.18.

Sam Hettich medaled in the 100 meter dash in fifth place with a time of 11.98 into the wind.

Sami Persic cleared 8' in the pole vault with a massive clearance of over a foot. She injured her ankle on the approach of her first attempt of 8' 6". It seemed clear to everyone there that she would have cleared 9'. Sami placed seventh.

Lisowski 3rd at Warwick, Persic 7th.

Dan Lisowski had his best shot put of the season, tossing it 46-07.75 to place 3rd in a very good field.  It was a nice bounce back for Lisowski who has struggled with his form of late.

Sami Persic cleared 8-06 in the pole vault, her best by a foot.  Persic even took a few good attempts at 9-06 and will look to clear 9-00 this Sunday at Eastern States.

The girls 4x800 ran a season best time of 10:03.  Eve Marenghi split 2:24, Alexa Baiano 2:32, Rachel O'Connell 2:30, and Crosby Tillman 2:34.  The girls B team ran 10:24 with Kat Delxandri running 2:37, Juliette Cooper 2:34, Jackie Kruger 2:38, and Sarah Corning popping a huge PR of 2:32.7.  Clearly the girls distance depth is coming back.

The boys 4x800m ran 8:05 as all runners struggled down the home stretch.  Frankie Licursi's 1:58.3 leadoff was the best leg of the day.  Charles Conway's 2:05 carry led the B team.

The girls 4x400m ran a season best time of 4:16.24.  Baiano led off in 64, Stephanie Craft split 65, Delandri split 66, and Eve Marenghi ran 60.0 on the end.  The B team saw Cooper run 67.8, Tillman 68.5, Kruger 68.5, and Lindsey Craig 66.5, a personal best for her.  Craig has finished the season with PR's in the 800m and 400m while Cooper's 65 and 2:34 PR's are very impressive for a rookie freshman.

Amy Brady sets freshmen school record

Freshman Amy Brady threw the disc 82-03 to set a new Somers 9th grade record. Brady's best coming into the meet was 77-00 that she threw on Tuesday to win the Somers Frosh/Soph Championships. She broke the record set by Hanna Monte in 2005 of 80-02. Brady is now the ranked 19th in NY State for freshmen discus throwers. RANKINGS HERE

Dan Lisowski placed 6th in the disc with a toss of 142-08 and 5th in the shot put with a throw off 44-04. With Joe Hanley throwing a PR 40-6, and Victor Prato throwing
40- 4 we had three throwers over 40' for the second straight meet. This is the first season since 1989 that we have had three throwers over 40' in the same meet.

The boys 4x800m relay ran a season best time of 8:03.66. Frankie Licursi (1:58.3), Albert Tunas (1:58.0), Isaac Shelby (2:03.7) and Scott Friedman (2:03.5) ran the fastest time by a Somers team in almost 2 years.

Kevin Nolan and Athur Fiorella both cleared 12' in the pole vault to tie for 7th place. Both broke the sophomore school record. This is also the first time in 10 plus years we have had two vaulters over 12' in the same season.

Alexa Baiano ran 2:27.80 for a new PR in the 800m, Kristy Licursi walked 8:43.18 for a new PR, and the girls 4x800m relay of Rachel O'Connell, Crosby Tillman, Jackie Kruger, and Sarah Corning placed 6th in 10:21.84.

Section 1 State Qualifier rescheduled

PRACTICE WILL BE HELD TODAY AT 2:45PM.

The Section 1 State Qualfier scheduled for Thursday, May 27th and Friday, May 28th has been rescheduled to do pending thunderstorms.

The first day of events will now take place on Friday, May 28th at Arlingington HS with a 5:30pm start.  THURSDAY EVENTS WILL BE RUN ON FRIDAY NOW.

The second day of events will now take place on Saturday, May 29th at White Plains with a 10:00am start.  FRIDAY'S SCHEDULE HAS BEEN MOVED TO SATURDAY.

Boys win Sectional title 91-76 over Pearl River

The Somers boys track and field team won their 7th title since 2001 and 8th spring title overall, 91-76 over Pearl River.  It was also the 16th boys track sectional titles (indoor and out) that coach Arnesen has led the team to.

Frankie Licursi, Dan Lisowski, and Jonathan Groton starred to bring home the title though it truly was a team effort.

Somers boys and girls sweep League Championships

The Somers boys and girls won League Championships today at John Jay HS in South Salem.  The boys dominated the field, scoring 252 points to Byram Hills 113 and Fox Lane's 111.  It is believed to be the most point ever scored by a Somers boys team.

The Lady Tuskers did not dissapoint as they scored 215 to John Jay's 137.  After winning 8 straight titles from 2001-2008 the Tuskers are back on top.

Boys 4x800 tunes up for Penn Relays with 8:13.12 2nd place finish

A day after racing each other down the home stretch to place 1-2 in the 2nd section of the 1600m at The Red Raider Relays (Tunas 4:33.57, Licursi 4:33.59), seniors Frankie Licursi and Albert Tunas ran the first two legs of the 4x800m relay that placed 2nd in 8:13.12.

With a strong wind blowing Licursi led off with his first sub 2:01 split ever, clocking 2:00.8.  Tunas also handed off in first as he split 2:01.5.

Sophomore Scott Friedman led the whole way as well and handed off to Isaac Shelby after his 2:04.0 carry.
Shelby went out very fast, hitting the first 400m in 58.5, the fastest split of the foursome.  He hung strong with Kellenberg through 600m but tied up down the home stretch to finish in 2:06.5.

The same four Tuskers will toe the line this Friday in front of over 20,000 fans at The Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA.  They qualified by running 8:09.01 at the indoor national championships.

GROTON RUNS 2:09 - running his first 800m ever. senior Jon Groton split 2:09 at The Ossining Relays after running the 4x1 and 4x2 relays.  Groton, known for his 200's and 400's more than anything else, actually ran 7 seconds faster than Tunas did his first time running 800m.

Adam Nelson visited Somers HS

On Sunday, May 3rd, the day after the Somers Lions Club Meet we had two special visitors at Somers High School. Adam Nelson and Augie Wolf put on a shot put clinic in our high school gym for twenty area high school throwers. We had twelve Somers throwers attend.

A local USATF club, the U.S. Athletic Trust Elite Track brought Adam Nelson to Somers. They were looking for a site to host Adam Nelson and we jumped at the chance!

Adam Nelson was the Silver Medalist in the 2000 Olympics and has been among the top five in the world in the shot put for the past ten years. Nelson has thrown over 72’ for his best throw.
He is a regular at the Millrose Games and has won at least five times at Millrose. Adam Nelson is a master of the rotational style of shot put. He is an excellent coach with an easy communication style. He emphasizes drills, technique and of course, hard work.

Augie Wolf was the second place finisher in the 1984 Olympic Trials and placed fourth at the Olympics Games in Los Angeles in 1984. Augie’s best throw was 69’ 9” with the glide style.
Augie is the head of the U.S. Athletic Trust Elite Track Club.

All of the clinic participants were mesmerized by Adam Nelson and Augie Wolf. Adam is very down to earth and is an excellent communicator. He has a tremendous depth of knowledge about the shot put and throwing techniques in general. Adam shared some great stories and at times showed glimpses of the intensity he brings to competitions. Everyone learned a great deal and were inspired by the session.

NEW ROCHELLE - As they watched Jocelyn Almodovar cross the finish line, her Somers teammates formed an excited huddle close by. Only a few seconds later when their time in the 800-meter relay was revealed did the jumping begin.

The Tuskers knew the competition in the 53rd annual Eastern States Championships at Iona Prep yesterday would be fierce, but they put together a team and set out with hopes of breaking their school record in the girls 800 relay.

With a time of 1 minute, 50.0 seconds, Katy Kleinberg, Alexa Baiano, Eve Marenghi and Almodovar not only broke the school record but also took first place, even though two of the members of the relay don't usually compete at the 200-meter distance.

"We were sitting here like, 'There's no way, there's no way,' but we got it," said Almodovar, a sophomore. "It's overwhelming. I heard someone yell, 'You're on track,' and I was just thinking you have to cross this line, you have to keep going, can't let your team down."

Girls 4x200 wins Eastern States, breaks school record

The Somers girls 4x200m relay team came together exactly once this spring season and wound up winning the Eastern States Championships at Iona Prep High School.

The team of sophomore Katy Kleinberg (28.3), freshman Alexa Baiano (27.6), sophomore Eve Marenghi (27.2), and sophomore Jocelyn Almodovar (26.8) combined to run 1:50.00.

They bettered the mark of 1:50.89 set at Eastern States in 2002. That team consisted of Kristin Boniello, Jessie Acuna, Ayana Wyse, and Andrea DeVito.

Kleinberg has been a mainstay on the sprint relay teams since 7th grade while Almodovar started with the team last spring as a freshman and quickly has become the top sprinter. Marenghi and Baiano both concentrate on the 400 and 800 during the season with Marenghi also running the 1500m.

With everyone back next winter, along with freshman Melissa Menta, the indoor record of 1:51.0 should also go down.
