SOMERS BOYS AND GIRLS WIN CLASS B TITLES AT JOE WYNNE SOMERS LIONS CLUB INVITATIONAL
The weather was perfect for the 37th annual Joe Wynne Somers Lions Club Invitational Track and Field Meet at Somers High School this past Friday and Saturday, May 3rd and 4th. 46 teams competed with the New Rochelle girls winning the overall team title with 143.5 points over Kellenberg who posted 88.5 points. The Somers girls placed fifth overall with 50 points. Arlington narrowly won the boys overall team title over Lakeland/Panas with a score of 89.5 to 86 points. The Somers boys placed 9th overall with 26 points. The competition was excellent with most of the top schools in the County and Section in attendance, as well as some from around the State.
The Somers Lions Club which helped start the meet with Coach Chuck Gilberti 37 years is instrumental in running the meet with over 50 volunteers helping over the two days.
Both the boys and girls teams dominated the Class B scoring with both teams winning the Class B division trophies. Both teams won by over 40 points in the Class B scoring.
Senior Josh Prywes had a very good day scoring in Class B in three throwing events. Prywes placed 5th overall and 2nd in Class B in the shot put. Prywes was sixth overall and 2nd in Class B in the discus with a toss of 110'6". Prywes finished his day with a fifth place finish in Class B in the javlein throw with a toss of 122' 1".
Brett Rozell placed fifth overall in the hammer throw and was the Class B champion with a heave of 109' 5".
Senior Mike Polvere placed fifth overall and was the Class B champion in the 3200 meter run with a personal best time of 10:15.6. Senior Justin Zorn, running on a sore foot placed third in Class B in the mile run with a time of 4:52,2. Senior Joe Larocca placed second in Class B in the 800 meter run with a personal best time of 2:08.9. The distance runners also had a great meet in the relays. The 4 x 1600 meter relay team of Matt Maliniak (4:50.3), Mike Maloney (4:52.3), Jesse Rinaldi (5:01.1) and Mike Polvere (4:46.2). were the Class B champions and placed seventh overall with a time of 19:30.0. The 4 x 800 meter relay team of Mike Maloney (2:14.6) , Stephen Herbert (2:13.9), Jack Fozard (2:17.8) , and Mike Polvere (2:08.8) placed third overall and won the Class B division with a time of 8:55.0.
The Sprint relays also performed well for the Tuskers. The 4 x 200 meter relay team of Matt Michaud, Marcus Griffith, Alex Graap, and Spencer Davis won the Class B championship with a time of 1:46.3. The 4 x 400 meter relay team of Dan Harwood, Lee Grieco, Joe Larocca, and Rudy Lepe placed sixth overall and second place in Class B with a time of 3:56.9..
The jumps also had a good day for the Tuskers. Zach handszer placed seventh overall and 2nd in Class B with a leap of 38'6.75" in the triple jump. Alex Mattos placed second in Class B and 8th overall in the high jump with a clearance of 5'6". James Marinier placed fourth overall and was the Class B Champion in the pole vault with a height of 10' 0". Mike Martello placed 7th overall and was second in Class B with a height of 9'0" to give the team a 1-2 finish in the pole vault.
It was a great team performance and effort. All aeras of the team performed well. This is the Team's 8th straight Class B Title at the Lions Meet.
Both Coach Arnesen and Coach Gallino were happy with their team's performance but were even more pleased that the meet which is a monumental effort went very well.
