Rosillo returns after 2 years

Senior captain Mike Rosillo returned to racing XC for th first time since the 2007 season. Rosillo placed 13th at the JFK Invitational JV race to help the team place 2nd to Farrell, a CHSAA power.

Sidelined with a stress fracture for over 6 months last year, Rosillo worked out in the pool and on the bike to maintain fitness. He then ran 4:52 last spring at the Section 1 Championships.

Then in late August he had a bad ankle sprain and achilles injury and lost another 3 weeks. He missed Big Red recovering and finally returned at JFK. He also ran 19:37 to finish at the 7th man on the varsity team for the first time in his career. Welcome back Mike.

The boys team ran the 3rd fastest team average for the classic white trails workout that the team has been doing since 2002, and that was without Isaac Shelby, who seems to be 100% recovered from a slight strain. Kai Crannell seems to be back to his spring form and ready for big things. Freshman Ben DeUrso and John Courtien both ran times that rank in the top 5 freshman of all time.

Sunday 9/13 practice at 3:30pm at Resevoir Road

Boys group 1 practice at 3:30pm at Resevoir Road. All 10-12th graders are invited (coach Fulton will be there).  DIRECTIONS/MAP HERE

Lady Tusker beat Pawling 59-61 for first win in 4 years

COMPLETE SOMERS RESULTS HERE - COMPLETE RESULTS HERE
Even though the Somers Lady Tuskers were losing the Pawling by 9 points through two girls they still pulled the win out 59-61 with a pack of 4 runners separated by merely 2 seconds. Eve Marenghi has gone from the 5th girl last year to the first girl this year as she placed 8th in 21:18, a new PR. But that's when it got interesting.
Claire Roediger charged home after a strong start and placed 11th in 22:11 and right on her heels was Julia Cavaliere (12th-22:12), Maggie Hashmall (13th-22:12), and Rachel O'Connell (14th-22:13). O'Connell had to be helped off the field after suffering from illness and dehydration. She was the 2nd girl most of the way.
The girls won the team jackets they have been trying to get since 2005.
The freshman girls team accomplished something that no other team in school history has done - they won an invitational. Led by Sarah Corning, who covered the 1.5 mile race in 10:54 to place 3rd, Somers placed 4 runners in the top 8 to score 34 points, winning by 46 points.
Michala Donnelly was 4th in 10:57 while Alyssa Passarelli was 6th in 10:59. Sarah Barr was 8th in 11:35, Rebecca Bertels 13th in 11:49, Jackie Kruger 17th in 12:03, and Elise Melito 26th in 13:21.

First day of school: Biggest team ever!

Today was the first day of school and the Somers Cross Country team has reached another milestone. Last year the team finished the season with 55 athletes on the team. Today 62 athletes were at practice, marking the biggest total ever. With 40 boys and 22 girls the team looked like a small army as they warmed up on campus today. Most runners did a tempo run on the course they will race this weekend at the 9th Annnual Big Red Invitational. 30 teams will toe the line this weekend and tackle the challenging course. Meet info here.

Practice, school starts

Thanks to all for helping with the XC course clean up on Friday. It was one of our best turn outs ever. This Monday practice will be at 2:45 behind Primrose. Coach Fulton might make it back from LI but he may not, so it will most likely be a captains practice.

Practice will be at the usual time, Tuesday-Friday, 2:45pm at Primrose. Athletes should not come over the Primrose until after 2:30. Before that they should be hanging out at the HS, getting changed, eventually getting extra help, etc. DO NOT COME TO PRIMROSE BEFORE 2:30!

Our home invitational, The Big Red Invitational, will be this Saturday at 10:00am. Athletes will need to arrive at 8:30 regardless if they are racing or not. Parents - we need your help directing traffic, managing the course, and with the concession stand. Please contact Julie Gorecki for concession stand and Dan Tillman about helping out, OR just show up for our volunteers meeting at 9:00am behind Primrose. 25 schools will be attending with over 1000 runners and the meet goes from 10:00-12:30.

LAST NOTE: Anyone can still join the team so please encourage any and all to just show up at Primrose at 2:45 if they are interested. We will allow people to join the team through September 18th.

Boys continue to impress with early season workout

Stepping onto the track during the XC season doesn't happen often here at Somers XC. But that's exactly what the boys group 1 and 2 did yesterday. According to coach Fulton, it has probably been over 5 years since the boys XC team did a workout on the track instead of their usual hill and trail work.

The workout on tap? 3K-1K-1K-1K 10x100m hills, all done at goal 5K race pace. The workout went very well. 3K times for the top seven: Gorecki (9:44), Conway (9:52), Tunas (9:52), Friedman (9:55), Sammel (9:57) Shelby (10:03), and LiCursi (10:59). Sophomore's Friedman and Sammel ran converted 3200m PR's of 10:38 and 10:40, looking smooth and comfortable the entire time.

With the first race a week from today and the first invitational a week from Saturday, the Running Tuskers are rounding into shape.

Girls team has record numbers

After struggling with participation numbers for the last three years, the Somers girls XC team has set a new team record for members. This years team boasts 23 members including 8 freshman. The team graduated many key members in 2006 and the following fall only 8 girls finished the season. In 2007 and 2008 10-13 girls were on the team and now with three senior rookies and 8 freshman, the squad appears headed back towards their glory days of 2003-2005, when they were ranked in the top 5 in the state. Last year's team was ranked 18th in NY State Class A.

Led by senior captain Rachel O'Connell the girls team not only has the numbers but also the talent to compete. With a top 6 consisting of O'Connell, Eve Marenghi, Julia Cavaliere, Maggie Hashmall, Crosby Tillman, and Claire Roediger, the Tuskers hope to contend for a league and Sectional titles. Freshman Michala Donnelly, Alyssa Passarelli, and Sarah Corning are expected to vie for varsity positions along with senior rookie Megan Brooks, giving the team the best depth they have had since the 2003 team won the JV Sectional title.
