MUD RUN! Fulton wins, Varsity boys take trophy, alumni repsresent well

The 9th Annual "Say Goodbye to XC Alumni Mud Race" went off on Friday and was well attended again. The costume portion of the race continues to grow. This year's gnome trophy went to the varsity boys, who all dressed up as the Village People AND performed a choreographed rendition of YMCA.

Coach Fulton won the race for the first time since it's first year. He set a blistering pace and even though he was caught by Albert Tunas and Josh Kneer ('06) he crawled under some pricker bushes to secure the win.

Many more pictures to come. If you have them please email them to me at tim@armorytrack.com.

7 Tusker earn All-County

Only the best of the best are selected to the Westchester All-County Team and this year seven Somers Tuskers earned that distinction.
Leading the way on the boys first team was Robert Gorecki. Gorecki's 16:55 at sectioals salvaged a sub par season and finished his XC career on a high note. 2nd team honors went to Albert Tunas and Charles Conway while senior Frankie LiCursi was voted to the 3rd team. It was Gorecki's 3rd straight time on the team while it was the first time selected for the other Tuskers.

Eve Marenghi, Rachel O'Connell, and Maggie Hashmall all were selected to the 3rd team. Three girls in one year ties the school record. 1986 and 2004 also saw three girls selected.

Athletes selected are expected to attend the All County Awards Dinner on Tuesday, December 8th. Athletes go for free but all others must pay $25 each.

Reservations (how many will attend) with a check are to be turned into coach Fulton by Monday, November 23rd (at the team awards dinner).

PLEASE MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO: WRDTFCA

DINNER IS AT THE COLONIAL TERRACE IN PEEKSKILL

Alumni Update: Apgar Battles Mud

TODD APGAR ('07) -NCAA REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS - Racing in the mud after 10 plus inches of rain doused the University of Maryland Eastern Shore cross country course thanks to Hurricane (Nor'easter) Ida. Finishing second for Monmouth just two seconds behind their number one runner and only one and a half seconds behind the former superb high school runner from Edgemont, Zach Bornstein (now running for George Washington University) Todd has now established himself as a solid Division One runner. In this regional championship he ran against the best from Princeton, Georgetown, Pitt, Temple, Penn, Penn State, Villanova, Lehigh, George Washington, American, Maryland, Delaware and other top programs.

In his first season at Monmouth since transferring from Lynchburg this past summer Todd was running as the number 10 / 11 runner after the first three races. He then made a huge leap to the number four runner last month and finished fifth for the team at their conference championship at Quinnipiac. Yesterday's finish as the two man was the highlight of a fine season.

Next Saturday is the IC4A Competition at VCP in the Bronx. This will mark the last XC race for his sophomore season. His time was 35:22 for his first ever 10 K race. They say the course was 90 to 120 seconds slow due to the terrible conditions. COMPLETE RESULTS HERE

Marenghi runs to 64th place at States

Eve Marenghi made the trip to Plattsburgh this weekend and proved she belonged with a 64th place finish. Marenghi struggled a little with the humidity (as she often does with her asthma) but still managed to run a solid race, covering the 5K course in 20:23.

The Class A race is one of the toughest races of it's kind in the country. The race was won by Aisling Cuffe of Cornwall, one of the favorites to win the Foot Locker National title next month. The Queensbury girls team took the title. They are ranked in the top ten in the country. The weather just got worse and worse as the day went as the rain kept getting harder.

Rachel O'Connell and Julia Cavaliere were in attendance cheering on their teammate. The girls are already talking about trying to come back to next year's meet as a team.

Marenghi Does It! Heading to States! Girls team 2nd for first time since 2005!

What a day it was up at Bowdoin Park as the Lady Tuskers came to run. Junior Eve Marenghi became the first Somers girl to qualify for the NY State Championships since Mary Alice Howard and Suzie Clinchy both went in 2005. Marenghi ran 20:17 to earn the 4th spot on the team of 5 individuals. She will race in Plattsburgh next Saturday and we'd like as many people to come cheer her on as possible.

Marenghi also helped lead the girls team to a 2nd place finish and upset Ursuline in the process. How did they do it? With a smart race plan that saw almost every single girl come back on the Ursuline girls the 2nd have of the race.

Senior captain Rachel O'Connell finished here career with her best race ever, running 20:57 for 12th place. It was a great finish for O'Connell who finishes as of the ten best Tuskers ever. Jr. rookie Maggie Hashmall was next in 21:25 and freshman Sarah Corning was 4th girl in 21:33. Crosby Tillman was the 5th girl in 22:07. Michala Donnelly and Meghan Brooks rounded out the team. The girls accomplished this despite missing usual top 5 runner Julia Cavaliere (sick) and Claire Roediger (Stress fracture).

With 8 of the top 9 girls back and the biggest freshman team ever the girls are hoping to win the Sectional title a year from now.

Boys run to 3rd place with 17:30 AVG. Gorecki runs past Viglione into 2nd place all time

After a few off weeks and sub par races the Somers Tuskers rebounded with a great effort to place 3rd at the Section 1 Championships with 83 points. Brewster won the race with 49.

Senior Robert Gorecki, who as struggling through a tough senior campaign, ran his best race ever to place 9th and miss qualifying for the state championships by 4 seconds. Gorecki ran 16:55 and still has to sit home next weekend. Last year 17:30 qualified and this year 17:05 qualified in Class AA. It was just one of those years.

Gorecki moved past All-State runner Niko Viglione into 2nd place on the Somers All Time Bowdoin Park list. Viglione ran 16:56 at the NYS Federation Championships in 2004.

Amazingly the next four runners finished within 3 second2 of each other as Charles Conway, Albert Tunas, Frankie LiCursi and Scott Friedman all ran 17:37-17:40. David Sammel ran 17:46 and Isaac Shelby 17:51 to round out the squad. The team average of 17:30 in the 2nd best ever. The only team better was the 2004 NY State Championship team.

Sammel and Friedman are now the two fastest Somers sophomores of all time as they both ran faster than Gorecki's 17:49 from the 2007 championship team.

The JV team had a fantastic day as well as the Tuskers ran to a 3rd place finish out of every school in Section 1, only losing to the two biggest schools - North Rockland and Arlington. Senior Mike Rosillo turned in his best effort ever with an 18:24 time. He now ranks in the top 25 all time for Somers runners.

Freshman Justin Zorn contiued his fantastic season with an 18:34 time to place 10th. Mike Persic was 13th in 18:38 and Kai Crannel saved his best for last with his 17th place 18:47 effort. Ryan Matsumoto was the 5th man today gutting out a 19:07 good for 34th place in a race with over 350 runners. John Courtien ran 19:44 which was about the same time Friedman and Sammel ran here last year. Alex Fusco ran 20:12.

The JV team broke the Somers JV course average record.

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS

The County Championships was a hueg success and we would like to thank all the parents and team members for their help with the event.

This was a long process, from working on the trails to setting up the flags to selling shirts and food to helping at the finish line to helping clean up. The number of people that help this program out on a weekly basis never ceases to amaze me and Roy.

As I finish my tenth year as the head coach at Somers I have been looking back a bit and it's pretty amazing how far we have come. Having the parents of runners that have already graduated coming back to help out still was one of the most impressive things.

Thanks again - most coaches loved the experience and there is a very good chance we could host the meet again next year.

Tim and Roy
