Zorn to Run

Boys Freshman Win County Title, Zorn Takes Individual Crown

For the 3rd straight year the freshman boys won the county championships. Destroying the competition the freshman scored 28 points to beat runner-up Iona Prep's 98.

Freshman Justin Zorn, in his first season of running, took the individual crown by 8 seconds. The rookie has proven to be one of the best freshman of all time.

John Courtien continued to have a fantastic freshman year as he placed 3rd. Ben D'Urso was 7th, Mike Maloney 12th, and Mike Polvere 14th. With 5 of the top 14 it was the lowest team score that we have ever won with. Last year's squad scored 36.

The JV boys put up a battle As Mike Persic and Mike Rosillo led the squad in 18:37 and 18:45. Ryan Matsumoto and Kai Crannel ran 19:17 and 19:20 and Elliot Kravits had his best race of the season with his 20:04 effort. The course was slippery and was running at least 30 seconds slower than usual.

The varsity boys struggled a bit to a 3rd place finish. Albert Tunas led the way in 14th with Charles Conway in 19th. Rob Gorecki struggled to a 20th place finish after cramping badly after the mile. Scott Friedman was 33rd, Isaac Shelby 41st, and David Sammel 47th. Usual 4th man Frankie LiCursi was sick but still battled to a 60th place finish.

The boys finished the decade with an average place of 3.4 at the County Championships. Only Horace Greeley was better over the last ten year with an average of 3.0.

First Annual Somers Middle School Invitational

With over 400 middle school runners in attendance the Somers Invitational was a hug success. Thanks to all team members, parents, and volunteers for making this event so enjoyable for all involved.

The Somers Middle School team looked very good and were led by 8th grader Bene Abbate, who won the 8th grade girls race in a new course record time of 9:23. While that was an encouraging sign for the future of Somers XC, even more impressive was the fact that 19 8th GRADE GIRLS finished the race. Add to that the 6 7th grade girls and the 23 varsity girls, that makes 48 girls who are involved in the program, easily the biggest team we've ever had. We look forward to next year.

The boys were led by Larry Courtien who placed 5th and Jesse Rinaldo who was 8th.

LEAGUE CHAMPS - ALL FIVE TEAMS WIN!

WOW - what can I say. This was a legendary day for the Somers XC program. It started out this morning when I realized we needed TWO buses to get all of our runners to the meet. Then the boys freshman dominated the race to win the league title. Then the boys varsity took the course. Somers had NO RUNNERS in the top 4 but placed 5-7-8-10-11 to win 41-42-43. That's right - Somers 41, Fox Lane 42, Greeley 43. WOW! The boys JV also won with a big race from Justin Zorn, who ran 18:45. Not bad for a freshman huh? The top 4 JV runners were all together as Persic (18:43), Matsumoto (18:45), Zorn (18:46), and Rosillo (18:48) beat Greeley's JV 25-32.

Then the girls took the course and did everything I asked them to. Eve Marenghi placed 2nd and was followed by Rachel O'Connell (4th) ROOKIE Maggie Hashmall (6th), FRESHMAN Sarah Corning (9th) and Julia Cavaliere (10th). FRESHMAN Michala Donnelly rounded out the ALL-LEAGUE girls in 14th place. they averaged 20:57. NICE JOB LADIES!

The JV girls also won their title making in a clean sweep for the Tuskers. MORE TO COME

Freshman boys roll at Manhattan

The freshman boys team ran to a great 7th place finish in the Boys Freshman race. The team averaged 7:08 on the day, and with the 2:20 conversion to the old course, it is arguably the best freshman team of all time. Their 7:08 average was also 28th best on the day. Over 300 HS competed in the meet.

Once again Justin Zorn was the top Tusker. Zorn placed 20th in 6:38. Teammate John Courtien ran 7:01 to place 34th and Ben D'Urso was 52nd inn 7:14. That's when the Tuskers stepped it up. Mike Maloney placed 55th in 7:20 and Mike Polvere ws 63rd in 7:26. Dan Carleton was 74th in 7:35 and Joe Laroca 78th in 7:37. All 7 would have had a chance to break 10:00 on the old course.

The boys will try and win their 3rd straight Westchester County Freshman title on October 31st at home.

The varsity boys did not have their best day but Albert Tunas and Charles Conway broke the 14 minute barrier and are ranked in the top 15 in school history. The team average of 14:01 in the 5th best ever. The boys 2007 team also ran poorly at the meet and then went on to win the Sectional title. Time will tell if the boys are good enough to accomplish that feat.

The JV boys turned in some solid performances. Mike Persic's 14:29 was a huge PR. Ryam Matsumoto ran 14:59, Mike Rosillo 15:06, Alex Fusco 15:48, Mikey Neborak 15:52, and elliot Kravits 15:54. The team placed 7th.

BUS TO BE BACK AT 9:40

The ETA on the trip from Rochester will be 9:40pm. A BIG THANKS YOU to Maureen Sammel for everything she did this weekend. From helping chaperone to arranging breakfast and lunch top buying new tarps to stretch on, it was much appreciated.

Boys run to 5th, girls 9th: Freshman girls average 21:53

The varsity boys placed 5th in the AA seeded race with 189 points as Rob Gorecki placed 12th in 15:51 on the 3 mile course. Albert Tunas was the 2nd Tusker in 16:21. Conway, Shelby, and LiCursi rounded out the scoring and Friedman and Sammel rounded out the top seven.

The girls were led by Eve Marenghi in 32nd place who ran 19:40. Rachel O'Connel was next in 20:06 while Maggie Hashmall improved from last week to 20:11. The team was without usual star Julia Cavaliere who was sick but Claire Roediger tunred in a solid race in 20:46. The two freshman Sarah Corning and Michala Donnelly stepped up when needed as both finished in 21:03 and 21:05.

One of the best stories of the day was the fact that the top 5 freshmen girls on the day averaged 21:53. Those 5 were Corning (21:03), Donnelly(21:05), Sarah Barr (22:08), Jackie Krueger (22:20), and Becca Bertels (22:49). Alyssa Passarelli (22:50)was once second back on Bertels. Olivia Myers (24:30) and Elise Melito (27:50) also finished in season bests as 8 freshman girls competed, our most ever. RESULTS HERE

McQuaid Trip

We're making good time on our way to Rochester. The kids have good snacks for me and Arnie to steal.

We have survived one stupid movie already.
