Girls win Galway Invitational 37-55 over Scotia-Glenville

It was a pack effort as The Somers Tuskers traveled to Section 2 for the Galway Invitational.  Maggie Hashmall led the way in 4th place and the 5th Tusker, Crosby Tillman, was 10th in 19:29.  That's a 24 second compression and the best in school history.  Eve Marenghi was 6th in 19:15, Sarah Corning was 8th in 19:24, freshman Bene Abbate was 9th in 19:27.  After a slow start to the year the girls are running better than ever.

Sophomore Jackie Kruger was 17th overall in 20:40, actually beating Scotia's 5th girls, as did first time XC runner Kat Delandri who placed 36th in 22:28.

The Somers boys also won their race, beating Glens Falls 26-58 with a 15:30 average even though they ran without the 2nd man from Big Red, Scott Friedman, who will be back next race.  Charles Conway was 2nd again, this time in 15:07 on the 2.82 mile course.  Sophomore Justin Zorn was the 2 man in 15:18.  Zorn actually took the lead at the 2 mile mark and then hung on for 4th.  Isaac Shelby was 5th in 15:25 and David Sammel was 7th in 15:34.  Shelby's race was his best XC ever and a step in the right direction.  5th man on the day was Ryan Matsumoto who ran 16:05 to place 9th while Kai Crannell was 13th in 16:22, both very good race for them.

Girls roll at Yorktown, average 21:29

Instructed to stay together, run 90% early and then bring it home a little bit faster, the girls varsity team handily beat Yorktown and John Jay CR to win their first 2 duals of the season.  The top five girls place 3-4-5-6-7 overall as Maggie Hashmall, Eve Marenghi, Bene Abbate, Crosby Tillman, and Sarah Corning ran 21:21-21:23, 21:31, 21:34, and 21:38 for a fantastic average of 21:29.

All the girls looked good but Hashmall especially looked smooth and relaxed.  And how about the 5K debut for freshman Bene Abbate?  Running her first race for the Tuskers at the HS level, Bene's 21:30 was the best 5K debut for a Tusker since Mary Alice Howard in 2002 (Howard's Result's here)

The boys, running without their top 11 runners, gave John Jay a race but still wound up losing both meets.  Mike Maloney led the way in 18:50 with Ben D'Urso and Mike Polvere right behind him.  Larry Courtien and Dan Carleton rounded out the scoring 5, who average 19:35.

Somers boys debut at #4 in NY State rankings

After a strong race at The Big Red Invitational the Somers Tusker boys debuted at #4 in the NY State Rankings this week.  McQuaid, from Section 5 Rochester area, is ranked #1 with Burnt Hills and Queensbury, both from Section 2 north of Albany, at 2nd and 3rd.  Rounding out the top 5 is Pittsford Sutherland from Section 5.

Brewster is ranked 11th.  The only reason they are that low is because they did not run a full squad last weekend, which dropped them down.  Once they are full strength they are expected to climb back into the top 5 with ease.

Tusker boys win Big Red with 17:06 average

Led by senior Captain Charles Conway the Tuskers won their home invitational 31-109 over New Fairfield, CT.  Somers put all 5 scorers in front of New Fairfield's number one runner.

Conway placed 2nd in 16:36.0, which was 45 seconds faster than last year.  Next in was Scott Friedman in 5th place at 17:02 (28 seconds faster), Dave Sammel in 7th at 17:08 (38 seconds faster), sophomore Justin Zorn in 8th at 17:22 (frosh race last year), and Isaac Shelby in 9th at 17:23 (38 seconds faster).

Ryan Matsumoto had his best race ever placing 12th overall in 17:34 (1:58 faster).  He clearly is going to be a player for the top 5 all season long.  7th man on the day Kai Crannell ran 18:16 to place 24th.

Brendan McDonnel was 30th in 18:36 to win the JV title on the day.  It was a lifetime best for McDonnel after dealing with numerous injuries.  He led the JV team to victory.  The top 6 JV runners beat all other teams JV runners (McDonnell, D'Urso, Persic, J. Courtien, Maloney, Polvere) and Dan Carleton was 8th in JV scoring. The JV team averaged 19:01.

Top freshman included Larry Courtien's 7th place finish in 9:04.  The team was 2nd to Warwick Valley, who's varsity team is ranked in the top 15 in the country.  Jesse Rinaldi was 17th, Matt Maliniak was 20th,  Craig Dammeyer was 48th, Zach Handzer was 59th, Jack Beresford was 70th, Matt Trujillo 86th, and Garret Shor 99th.  116 boys finished the race.

The girls varsity was missing a few runners but still placed 4th with a 22:50 average.  Eve Marenghi (16th, Maggie Hashmall (19th), Sarah Corning (29th), Michala Donnelly (43rd), Jackie Kruger (53rd), Kristi Licursi (59th), and Sarah Barr (71st) were the varsity 7 on the day.  The team looks forward to getting Crosby Tillman, Claire Roediger, Bene Abbate, and Kat Delandri back next week.

The girls freshman team saw Andie Simon and Christine Nolan place 15th and 18th to earn T-Shirts.  Jenna Fulton was 37th and Taylor Heanue 68th.  75 girls finished the race.

First White Loops ("Dubs") of season goes well

Even though the boys were told to stay smooth and run "2-3% less effort then usual" the boys varsity team ran very well on the historic workout here at Somers.  Their 3:52 average for the 1130m hilly woods loop was just 1 second off the 3rd best time ever even though they were missing 7th and 8th men Mike Persic and Kai Crannell.

Not only does the varsity boys team looked poised for great things this year but the JV and freshmen teams also look very deep.  FULL WHITE LOOPS HISTORY HERE

Boys Group 1 finishes tough workout in dark

LINK TO FULL SIZE VIDEO

With the temperature soaring all week the boys varsity group 1 and 2 met at 7pm on the track to complete their evening workout, instead of 5pm with everyone else.  The task at hand: 25x400m

Group 1 consisted of Charles Conway, Scott Friedman, Isaac Shelby, David Sammel, Kai Crannel, and Ryan Matsumoto.  Their goal was 5 x (5x400m).  Break was 45 seconds between each 400 and 3 minutes between sets.  The pace was declining, so they started at 85 and went 80-75-70-65.

The group stayed very close together throughout the workout, hitting their splits with Isaac Shelby setting a great pace.  The last set saw Charles Conway continue to look better than ever and all of the boys finished in the 64-70 range.  Watching Dave Sammel charge down the backstretch to close in the 67 second area signified just how far this group has come in a year.

Group 2 had Brendan McDonnell, Mike Persic, Alex Fusco, and Mike Maloney.  They did 4x (5x400) at 90-85-80-75.

Overall it was one of the best workouts the team has every done and should give us confidence as we move forward and get ready to start our season.
