Boys win Sectional title

Sprints, Distance, Field all step up
What a day for Somers Track and Field.  The Tusker boys won their 9th Sectional title since 1998 and first since 2008 with a well rounded attack.  They have won more titles than any other team in school history.  The final score was Somers 83, Harrison 70.  Pearl River won last year.

The sprint squad continued their fine season.  Jon Groton placed 5th in a touch 55m dash field in 6.89 and then teammed up with Jon Garcia to placed 2nd and 3rd in the 300m.  Groton placed 3rd out of the unseeded section, running in lane 6 the whole way.

The boys 4x200m relay was something to watch.  Running without usual anchor Groton, Tino Delzotto stepped in and ran a fantastic anchor leg split of 23.7 to bring the team from 2nd to first.  After Garcia, Robatel, and Hettich ran the first three legs Delzotta picked a great day to prove he's the real deal.

The boys 4x400m also pulled out a win, and this time in a MEET RECORD.  Groton led off in 52.8 and handed off to sophomore Scott Friedman who split an amazing 53.2  Sam Hettich ran 3rd leg and split 53.9 and Garcia brought the squad home, holding off a challenge from Harrison, in 51.8.  Their time of 3:31.3 is a new meet record by over 7 seconds!

Yes the sprinters and jumpers were great, but they have been all year.  Last year was a rebuilding year for the distance runners and a major reason that the team did not win Sectionals.  This year they scored 26 of the 83 points even without top dog Robert Gorecki, who is out for the season.

The 3200m run saw junior Charles Conway and sophomore David Sammel run 10:18-10:21 for 4th and 5th place.  It was the 3rd best sophomore time in school history for Sammel.

The 1000m was one of the greatest races in Somers track history.  Frankie Licursi went out crazy hard, splitting 60-1:32-2:05 and hanging on for 2nd place with a time of 2:38.0.  The time ranks him in the top ten all time at Somers.

The 600m saw Albert Tunas bounce back from a season plaqued by injury to run 1:26.5 and place 4th.  Tunas kept fighting to get healthy and he is finally running the way was all knew he could.

The 1600m was another great one.  Sophomore Scott Friedman ran 4:38.0 to place 4th and set a new Somers  sophomore record, breaking Jeff May-Stahl's record of 4:39.0 set in 1994 (coach Fulton's senior year on the team).  Friedman is truly on his way to being the next great Somers miler.

The 4x800m relay team of Tunas, Conway, Shelby, and Licursi ran 8:30 to place 4th -all after running an event earlier.  The time is only 3 seconds off their season best.

Dan Lisowski won the shot put for the only Somers win outside of the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

More results and highlights to come....

Alumn entrepreneur trying to change the world

Jasmine Stine, class of 2003, is working on an exciting project.  Jasmine was a hurdler for Somers who qualified for the final at the Westchester County Championships her senior year.  She is one of 5 Stine's to compete for Somers Track. (Julian, Jasmine, Chelsea, Kaya, and Yasha)

Bean's getting closer to 4:00

2006 Somers graduate Alex Bean update:

Up at Yale, the men’s distance runners demonstrated their depth and showed that they will be major competitors at the Big East Championship. Barely short of the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 4:03.5 on a banked track, three Hoyas timed in at 4:04 in the mile. Though they came into this past weekend with high hopes of breaking the storied 4-minute barrier, the pacing was a little off and the middle 600m was too slow.
While senior Alex Bean’s and graduate student Alex Mason’s domination of the middle distance events this season has earned them the title of the “Bash Brothers,” senior Sandy Roberts nearly crashed the party, coming up just short down the final stretch to place third with a time of 4:04.75. Bean positioned himself right behind the pacer from the beginning, and once again took control of the race, battling it out with Mason. Both runners finished with new personal records. Edging out Mason, who came in at 4:04.71, Bean won the race with a time of 4:04.54.

Dan Lisowski threw the shot 49' 8" for 2nd overall and was the Class B Champ. That is the number 3 all time performance for Somers, just 3.5 inches off the school record, set by Nick DeBellis. Sam Hettich won the class B high jump at 5' 6". James Cascio won the Class B 55 HH at 8.63 FAT and made the overall final with a time of 8.55. The 4 x 200 team of Garcia, Pierotti, Robatel, and Groton ran 1:34.6 for 4th overall and 1st in Class B, just .4 off the school record set by Kevin Winters, Chris Gonzalez, Nick Gonzalez, and Morhan Abdelnour. Girls win 9th straight County Class B Title, boys 2nd

COMPLETE SOMERS RESULTS - COMPLETE MEET RESULTS

The Somers girls track and field team once again won the Westchester County Class B title, this time beating Harrison 49-28.  Crosby Tillman won the overall title in the 1500m race walk.  Class Champions included Eve Marenghi (600m), Maggie Hashmall (1000m), Kriztine Zmuidins (shot put), Sami Persic (pole vault), and the 4x800m relay team of Hashmall, Tillman, Jackie Kruger, and Rachel O'Connell.

Placing 2nd in class was Kim Walsh in the 55m (7.92), O'Connell in the 1000m, Jess Liberatore in the high jump, and both the 4x200m and 4x400m relays.  The 4x200m relay of Katy Kleinberg, Walsh, Marenghi, and Almodovar ran 1:51.90, the fastest time this season.  The time is also the 4th best in school history and the fastest since the school record of 1:50.8 set in 2005.  Interestingly enough, it was also only .01 off the fastest time ever run on a 200m track as the school record was run on what is considered an oversized 250m track at Rockland Community College.

BOYS HIGHLIGHTS TO COME...
